Wardlaw, Susan and Ned

What's in a Name?

About a month before we found a scruffy, dirty, smelly little dog as we came out of a friend's wedding in downtown Rocky Mount, I had received a call from my wife Susan who was in Chapel Hill seeing her oncologist, Dr. Richard Goldberg. She said to me, "Just call me NED."

I said, "Susan, have you and your sister had a little wine with lunch?" "No," she said, "Dr. Goldberg says from now on I am NED....No Evidence of Disease!"

Well, needless to say when we finally claimed our little foundling poodle, long before the cancer returned, we, of course, named him NED...a perfect name for a perfect pal. He was the best therapy Susan could have had for about 18 months and now he is my lifesaver.

Wardlaw Lamar
